Carry On and Ditch the Excess Baggage! A Journey Through Depression Divorce and Cancer (Audible Audio Edition) Tiffany Allen Kelsea Burke Books Reviews
Everyone deals with obstacles in their life. Let's face it. Life cannot always be a bowl of cherries. Ms. Allen does a remarkable job at reminding us of our "humanness" and gives us an opportunity to laugh, cry and reflect on our own personal journey through her own ups and downs. No road is without pot holes, and she has had her share. If you're looking to see "the real" in observing how this dynamic woman overcame her obstacles by putting one foot in front of the other, then this book is a must read. She has beautifully shared her life and given those of us who have lost hope a new and reignited flame for taking hold of our destiny.
I picked up Tiffany Allen's book to read because I loved the title and had been through two out of the three things in her subtitle. Trying to imagine adding cancer to the mix boggled my mind, and so reading her book became imperative. I had to know, how did she "carry on and ditch the excess baggage"? How did she handle depression, divorce and cancer and then decide to write about it? Writing takes so much courage, a warrior spirit, and the fact that she was willing to put her story out there, made me want to get to know this person through her words.
I'm so glad I did! Ms. Allen is honest and straight-forward in her storytelling. She ends each "vignette" with a hard-won lesson, and by the time you finish her book, you know exactly what the word resilience really means. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is tired of carrying around their excess baggage. This book is one person's way of ditching it, but it will inspire you to start ditching your own.
A sentence from the book sticks in my mind, "There is nothing linear about grief." What an mindful way to think of it! Much of the book deals with overcoming in a humorous way, but there are serious gems scattered throughout. Tiffany is a fan of self-help books and has written one that helped her work through three devastating life trials. I especially liked the section dealing with breast cancer, as I have also experienced it. I wanted to hear more about the surgeries. Perhaps that is for another piece? Her honesty and hard look at her own motivations and internal problems shows strength of character. The descriptions of anxiety, self doubt and the crazies show us how hard it is to work on healing. "But maybe there's also some one who needs to know that there are others who have felt the same crazy, and that crazy doesn't have to mean hopeless." There is certainly hopefulness in the quotations, the lessons learned and in suggestions of helpful readings. We all need a little help from our friends and she has offered her encouragement to carry on for us all.
I normally don't make it through a non-fiction book, but I read the whole thing in two days. It's funny, kept me engaged, and for the first time, helped me to understand how someone with anxiety like this feels and thinks and struggles with. My son deals with anxiety, and this was really helpful for me as I receive the calls. I appreciate the author's vulnerability and ability to put her thoughts and feelings into words. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
This is a beautifully written book about the author’s trial throughout her life through depression, divorce and even cancer. The author’s style is appealing and the book is filled with raw honesty. I loved her anecdotes about her early life as a schoolgirl, the stories were very engaging. She talks about falling in love with her lifelong crush, marrying him, and then being absolutely devastated when it was over. She explores the different colors of her grief as she tried to work through it, explaining what some of us have experienced, that the five stages are not sequential necessarily! She goes into her ordeal of fighting cancer and finds a strength that she never knew she had. Then she comes to the wisdom of the words “let it be”, and talks about the importance of forgiveness. This book is full of warm understanding for those who’ve experienced any tribulations in life.
What an inspirational story to show women that they can be strong and make it through anything. in Tiffany's book, she demonstrates that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. Great lessons learning sections in each of the chapters and she writes with humor that lightens some of the topic.
